General John Stuart Williams
The First Tennessee Cavalry (Carter's) was assigned to General John S. Williams Cavalry Brigade from August 1863 through October 1863 and Williams ~ Giltner from October 1863 through February 1864. With Williams, the First Tennessee Cavalry helped with the escort of General Longstreet after he abandoned his siege of Knoxville. With Williams, they participated in the engagements at Cumberland Gap, Bristol, Blountsville, Blue Springs, Saltville, Cambell's Station, Bean Station, Dandridge, Wyerman's Mill and others.
After the war, John S. Williams was elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate and
served from March 4, 1879, to March 3, 1885. He died in Mount Sterling, Kentucky on July 17, 1898.
