GENERAL VAUGHN'S CAVALRY BRIGADE AT THE END OF APRIL, 1864
Nearly every one of Vaughn;s units were split asunder. Hundreds of
destitute men remained behind, strewn over East Tennessee and western
North Carolina with little organization or leadership. The ones that
went with Vaughn were in only slightly better condition. On the morning
of May 31, Vaughn arrived in Central Depot (modern day Radford) with
perhaps a thousand men, plus eight companies of the Thomas Legion. From
there, they proceeded to Lynchburg.
